The fight - or - flight response

The fight - or - flight response is the body's automatic built - in system designed to protect us from threat or danger. It is a physiological reaction that occurs in response to a perceived harmful event, attack or threat to survival.

Our autonomic nervous system is the primary mechanism in control of the fight - or -flight response. The system acts mostly unconsciously and regulates heart and respiratory rate, digestion, pupillary response, urination and sexual arousal.

The sympathetic nervous system activates the physiological changes that occurs during the fight - or flight response. The system is activated due to the sudden release of homones.

The parasympathetic nervous system activates the "rest and digest" response and returns the body to homeostasis after the fight- or- flight response.

The response reaction begins in the amygdala, which triggers a neural response in the hypothalamus. The pituitary and adrenal glands are activated. Hormone Cortisol is produced, which increases blood pressure, blood sugar, and supresses the immune system. Adrenaline with other hormones are involved together with liver cells.

There are three stages of stress: the alarm (the fight - or -flight response)

the resistance

the exhaustion

People with higher levels of emotional reactivity may be prone to anxiety and aggression. Anger and fear support the fight - or - flight response.

Physical effects of the fight -or -flight response:

heart rate increase, shaking, dry mouth, slowed digestion, loss of peripheral vision, constriction of blood vessels, tensed muscles and more

Taming the fight - or -flight response:

pranayma breathing in yoga; deep breathing exercises

meditation, vizualization

taking B-komlex

avoiding too much alcohol, caffeine and nicotine

massage, muscle relaxation

calming the Triple Warmer

the TRIPLE WARMER

The Triple Warmer is a functional energy system in our body. It is a collection of functions rather than a physical organ, some people call it "an organ with no form".

The Triple Warmer mobilizes the body's energies for the fight - or flight response. During the danger or threat it coordinates with all the other energy systems to activate the immune response. It govern the immune system, the emergency response to threat and the ability to form habits for managing stress or threat.

It is responsible for producing and circulating nourishing energy in our body. It provides transportation of Qi energy that we were born with (it is a different kind of Qi; it is called Yuan Qi) . The Triple Warmer transports this "our born with energy"between the Kidneys and all other organs with the help of three Burners /Warmers.

These three Burners work like a thermostat that controls the central heating system of the body. They communicate among each other constantly.

The Upper Burner - area of the Heart, Pericardium, Lungs and Throat; the Kidneys turn fluid into a mist and send it back to the Lungs to be moistened.

The Middle Burner - area of the Stomach, Spleen, Gall Bladder; digestion and breaking down of food, drink and distribution of nutrients to the rest of the body.

The Lower Burner - area of Kidneys, Bladder, Small Intestine, Large Intestine, Liver and Uterus (functionally); separation of food and drink waste and elimination of the rest to the Bladder.

The Triple Warmer regulates all of these organs mentioned above.

The Triple Warmer and the stresses of modern life:

The Triple Warmer mobilizes the body's energies for the fight - or- flight response. In today's world we deal with much more stress than ever before. In the 21st century there is so much anxiety, fear and dis-eases related to stress ; these stresses of modern life make our Triple Warmer work too much and our Tripe Warmer can be confused - the energy system thinks when we freak out from a really stressful situation it is the death threatening situation (which is not in most cases ). Some stressful situations can be really unpleasant but we will not die, we will survive. Our Triple Warmer doesn't recognize that in these modern times and it is overcharged in this stress-filled culture to protect us. It can be absolutely overwhelm and it can drain other meridians of their energies (especially the Spleen one). The result is that we don't feel good, don't have enough energy and get sick easily. We have to learn to keep the Triple Warmer calm in situations that trigger feelings and behaviours that are rooted in painful or stressful experiences from our childhood so our Triple Warmer will not go constantly into a threat response.

To calm the Triple Warmer, it is good to know something about its meridian.

The TRIPLE WARMER MERIDIAN

The Triple Warmer meridian is responsible for the movent and transformation of various solids and fluids, as well as for the production and circulation of nourishing and protective energy.

This meridian begins on the ring finger (the 4th finger), by the outside corner of the nail, passes between the knuckles of the fourth and fifth fingers to the wrist. From there it ascends between radius and ulna bones of the forearm, tip of the elbow, and up the back of the arm and shoulder.

It continues behind the top of the shoulder, it joins the small intestine meridian and the governing vessels channel. It moves to the collarbone area, descends to the pericardium, abdomen and lower abdomen (the three Burners area). Re-emerging from the chest the meridian ascends neck and around the back of the ear.

One branch rises internally to meet the gall bladder meridian on the forehead, then descends to join the the small intestine meridian on the neck.

The other branch goes to the front of the ear, outer corner of the eyebrow, where it joins gall bladder meridian again.

How to work with The Triple Warmer Meridian?

Many years ago when I was a little girl I noticed how beautifuly and calm I felt when my Mom or Grandma placed their hands on my cheeks to caress me. The hand touched side of my cheek and the ear and slow moved down my neck. It felt so nice, I remember those gentle snuggeling times and now I try to offer them to my children.

Later in my life I noticed when I was tired, I always placed palms of my hand on my forehead trying to massage my forehead with my fingers. It was an automatic reaction, lot of people do this without even knowing it. You can be working in front of your computer, you get tired or stressed from your work and you put your forehead in your hands, massaging your forehead with fingers, you close your eyes and relax for a minute. It feels good and it calms you down.

You are actually calming your Triple Warmer!!

Donna Eden, a wonderful teacher in the field of energy medicine teaches how to lovingly work with The Triple Warmer and its meridian. Her exercises include how to retrain the Triple Warmer, an exercise called "The stress dissolver", " The Tripple Warmer Smoothie" or "The Triple Warmer Tap". You can find her online or read her amazing book Energy Medicine for Women.

I use some of her exercises and lovingly move and shift the energy in the body, it feels so good! I like to work with The Triple Warmer meridian. I usually trace it backwards three times to reduce excess energy from The Triple Warmer and to bring a sense of relaxation and calm the body. Then I trace the Spleen Meridian forward to give some energy to the Spleen (that The Triple Warmer took from). I hold neurovascular points to sedate the Triple Warmer Meridian and I also massage the meridians accupressure points.

The meridian's points

Lot of The Triple Warmer Meridian points help with headaches, even migraines, tinnitus, tootaches and more.

People love to be gently massaged around their ears - feels so relaxing and all stress goes away. I would like to mention point TW 23, outer corner of the eyebrow - headache, dizzines, tootache; TW 22, upper ear from the cheek side, - headache, tinnitus; TW 20 at the top of the ear - migraine, tinnitus, mumps, cataract, toothache; TW 17 at the lower ear - tinnitus, deafness, tootache, hiccup.

I always pay a deep attention to an arm massage, I never skip it! Lot of people say that it is one of the most antistress and relaxing massages, some people even prefer it to a head massage. On the arm and the hand they are a few points good to know:

TW 11, 10, 9, 5 - they all help with migraines, deafness or tinnitus

I would mention points TW 3, TW 2 on the hand - again headaches, dizzines mostly and point TW 1 helps with sore throat, high fever, headaches or tinnitus

Now you know how to calm your stress, anxiety and worry

You can reclaim your own power!
