THE MIND

Updated: Jan 30, 2024

The mind is the mirror of pure awareness. It is a set of mental energies like thoughts, memory, will, imagination, sensations, feelings and more. These energies are responsible for perception, belief, desire, emotion, intention, thinking, reasoning, motivation or pain experience. The mind can be experienced as awareness, intelligence or wisdom, because the light of pure awareness shines through it. It reflects consciousness, which lives in the heart and pervades our whole being. Every thought, feeling, emotion is a flow of energy through our brain and body.

The mind is the person's ability to think, perceive, feel, see, hear, smell (ability to use our senses). It is a faculty of thoughts and consciousness. The mind is constantly moving like water in the river; it is the subtle matter energy. It contains very subtle channels opening into our sense organs and our brain. But it moves through the whole body and it is also around the body too.

Thinking is a psychic activity, our consciousness using thoughts (mental acts that allow us to make sense of things in the world). Out thinking can produce opinions or ideas.

Consciousness is our ability to perceive the relationship between oneself and one's environment.

Unconscious mind is a reservoir of feelings, thoughts, memories, urges outside of conscious awareness. It is used for example when a baby is born and takes his or her first breath.

Pure clear consciousness increases in density and results in matter that produces mind together with the senses and the five elements.

Mind is the individual itself. The cosmos energies make the activities of the mind. Mind exists because of these energies (cosmic, vital, mental, intellectual, life force energies; there are very subtle with amazing lighting speed and radiance).

Mind stages:

  • Restless mind - the lowest stage of the mind ; not possible to reach self-realization, to reach one's true Self, chaotic, hyperactive, out of control - lot of people nowadays - "I don't know what I am doing....."

  • Dull mind - heavy, not going anywhere, not possible to think clearly - lazy, always tired or exhausted people; a person with a hangover for example - "I don't feel like doing anything...."

  • Occasionally steady mind and distracted from time to time - our mind in our life

  • Relaxed mind, not distracted, one - pointed, focused mind = this is the first stage of the mind in Yoga practice

  • Enveloped mind - fully concentrated mind, totally absorbed, no distraction, we are fully connected to our Self in our heart.....

Mind activities:

  • Understanding, right knowledge - it is based on direct observation, logic and verbal communication

  • Misapprehension (the most frequent activity), - a mistaken belief about something, an error, false knowledge - it leads to ignorance or ignorance can lead to false knowledge = "We don't see things as they are, we see things as we are "

  • Imagination- is the knowledge without the fact, no reality

  • Deep sleep - there is an absence of other activities, it is unconscious

  • Memory - ability to preserve, retain, recall knowledge or information or experience

- memory can be karmic, elemental, sensory, articular, conscious, genetic, atomic, cellular and more

Each activity has it's own characteristics.

Mind Categories:

  • Intellectual mind - thoughts, knowledge, discrimination, judgment, criticism, opinion, decision, will.....

  • Identity mind (ego) - self-awareness, self-identity

  • Sensory mind - feelings, emotions, desires

  • Fluid mind

  • Silent mind

  • Harmonious mind

These mind categories or layers are composed of the Chitta.

The Intellectual mind has just 1 dimension, only the intellect using the mind and everything has to be logical; we don't allow other dimensions to manifest.

The Identity mind (putting everything "in the boxes" - nationality, gender, religion etc.)

Intellect and Identity minds are external minds, they work together, they are here for our survival but using only them we don't allow other things happen in our life, we are restricted and never be free.

We are only "outside" and can't go "inside". It leads to inner unhappiness, depression and suffering. That is very common among businessmen and people who want only money and materialistic lifestyle. The Intellect is trapped and can't expand.

It is said in Jogic wisdom that "Intellect is the knife and Identity is the hand "- they kill together.

Conditional mind (or Sensory mind)

This mind connects us to the outer world through the senses; it is how we function mentally

Connected to our five senses; 5 senses connect us with 5 sense organs for our life experience. Works together with our intellectual and identity mind = what to do, how to respond etc.

Chitta Mind: (there is not a correct English translation for the Sanscrit word Chitta, "chit " means pure consciousness). It is manifested through the functions of intelligence, ego, and sensory mind because of fluctuations of the mind.

It is the Internal mind, our inner sixth sense, the inner wisdom, "our inner voice".

Possible to reach with the enveloped mind (ability to fully concentrate). It is able to hold focus and reach alfa, delta and gamma brain waves.

Chitta is the intelligence inside of us, depends on how we can expand it, how to access it to touch this dimension of cosmic intelligence.

Our experiences (including the ones from our past lives) flow into our mind through subtle chitta's channel and they are stored in the inner world of our heart.

This mind is constituted by prime energies of light, harmony, clarity, movement, activity, darkness and decay - they work together.

We have to practice how to reach the Chitta mind because we are often trapped by our intellect and ego (identity). Practice how to concentrate, meditate, how not to be so materialistic, how to open our Hearts more. This mind's main seat is in our Heart area like consciousness. It is not close to the senses like the sensory mind, it is close to our consciousness. Some yogis say it is our consciousness. When you calm your mind - by going inside and listening - you will feel the vibration in the different places of your body = whirlpools of energy (the chakras).

Harmonious mind

The most inner mind. The pure consciousness composed only by love, light, harmony, balance, virtue, happiness, clarity and high intelligence. The noise of the mind created by our ego, desire, anger, fear is totally gone, only inner peace remains.

Mind interruptions:

Failure to concentrate, Instability, False knowledge, Misapprehension, Regression (going back in evolution development), Mental stagnation, Doubts, Lack of foresight ( not being able to make good decision for the future), Carelessness (failure to give an attention to avoid harm or errors), Fatigue,Illusions, Overindulge (having too much of something like alcohol, food or sex etc), Lack of perseverance and more.

All of those above are accompanied by suffering and unstable mind. Our unstable mind is responsible for our negative thinking, dejection, and bad inhalation or exhalation (incorrect unhealthy breathing).

Solution? We have to practice concentration, focusing our mind to 1 object to eliminate these disturbances, learn correct breathing (especially longer exhaling and retaining the breath), learn how to meditate, learn about correct nutrition, learn how to use the internet and its devices less so it will not influence us and damage our mind, start to practice Yamas and Niyamas in yoga, followed by Asanas, Pranayama, and other limbs of yoga or Tai - chi or other mind related philosophies, life styles etc.to promote health, balance and total peace.

Each cell in our body has its own awareness, the cosmic intelligence that is responsible for creation and cosmic laws and principles. This awareness governs cell intelligence, which maintains its correct metabolism and living.
